Introduction:

NVIDIA introduced three mid-term upgraded ‘Super’ series graphics cards at CES: 4070 Super, 4070Ti Super, and 4080 Super. The RTX4070 Super features a new color, design, and improved specifications compared to the 4070,and has increased stream processors, L2 cache, and a lower default power consumption compared to the 4070Ti.The upcoming release of the RTX 4070 Super is expected to bridge the gap between the perceptions of enthusiasts and the actual market performance. Priced at $599, the 4070 Super promises performance more in line with the RTX 3090, while maintaining impressive power efficiency, albeit with a slight increase in overall power consumption compared to the regular 4070.

However, the price of a graphics card exceeding that of an entire Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 remains a tough pill to swallow. Additionally, the 4070 Super faces competition from AMD’s Radeon 7800 XT, which offers similar or better performance, additional memory, and can often be purchased for as little as $510. Nonetheless, in the current GPU market, where high prices persist due to the lingering effects of the 2020–2021 shortage, a significant performance boost for a card less than a year old, available at the same price, is considered a victory.

Overview of NVIDIA’s RTX4070 Super and its specifications:

Performance Testing and Comparison of RTX 4070 Super, 4070, and 4070Ti

We have tested these GPUs with a range of popular games and 3DMark, specifically focusing on 1440p and 4K resolutions, which align with the capabilities of the card. Our analysis includes charts for games featuring demanding ray-tracing effects such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Returnal, as well as performance measurements with DLSS .

RTX 4070 Super outperforms 4070 by 18% in 3Dmark Time Spy Extreme.

RTX 4070 Super outperforms 4070 by 20% in 3Dmark DXR Raytracing Test.

In 2K resolution, 4070 Super is 22% faster than 4070 in CS2 game.

At 4K resolution, 4070 Super is 19% faster than 4070 in CS2 game.

Performance Comparison of 4070 Super, 4070, and 4070Ti in Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2:
4070 Super outperforms 4070 by 19% at 2K resolution without ray tracing or DLSS.With ray tracing enabled, 4070 Super is 16% better than 4070 at 2K resolution.

At 4K resolution, the performance gap between 4070 Super and 4070 remains at 19%.

Overall, the productivity performance gap between 4070, 4070 Super, and 4070Ti GPUs is not significant.

Conclutions:

The GeForce RTX 4070 Super is undoubtedly an inarguable choice for the majority of GPU consumers. It not only equals the price point of the 4070 model but also surpasses it in terms of performance, which is remarkable considering it’s a $600 card capable of competing with heavyweight alternatives like the 3080 Ti and 3090, priced at $1,199 and $1,499 respectively.

Although instances exist where the 4070 Super’s 192-bit memory interface appears limiting, particularly at 4K resolution when compared to the 3080 Ti, its architectural advancements and increased processing capabilities typically keep it in the competition.

Our current position in the progression of this GPU generation means potential buyers have an easier decision to make. Rather than having to compare the current offerings and the remaining previous-gen GeForce and Radeon cards, one can safely focus on the current choices alone, with previous-gen models like 6800 XT or 3080 Ti now considered redundant.

Nevertheless, the RTX 4070 Super does present a slight dilemma in Nvidia’s GPU range, leaving a substantial gap where affordable options are sparse. Presently, three alternatives exist between the $299 RTX 4060 and 4070 Super: the 8GB 4060 Ti at $399, the 16GB 4060 Ti at $449, and the standard RTX 4070 at $549.

In a direct comparison, the 4060 Ti is around 10-20% faster than the 4060 for a 33% increase in cost, while the 4070 Super typically boasts 12-22% more performance than the standard 4070 for merely 9% more investment. In this context, even a slight discount on either card could make it an attractive deal. However, at typical prices, the savvier strategy would be to opt for the regular 4060, invest a bit more for the superior 4070 Super, or turn attention toward what AMD has to offer.

AMD continues to pose a valid alternative with its classic offering – slightly lower investment for comparable or superior rasterized performance, albeit with higher power consumption and mediocre ray-tracing performance. If 1440p high frame rate or satisfactory 60 fps 4K performance is the objective, AMD’s 7800 XT remains a feasible pick with closer proximity to a $500 price point than $600. Lastly, while potential aspects to favor the 4070 Super or even the standard 4070 include power consumption, enhanced ray-tracing efficiency, and DLSS support, if these features aren’t of interest, consider the AMD option to save some cash.
